Principal Staff Engineer
Hybrid role, based in Seattle

RPI Print is a leading provider of digital print services, powering creative solutions for high-quality brands such as RPI's own Blurb.com. In our quest to continually innovate, we are seeking a Principal Staff Engineer who can both lead at an architectural level and write key aspects of our critical-path code. This role will have significant oversight of the entire technical stack across RPI and Blurb, reporting directly to the VP of Engineering. Come help us shape the technical future of a company dedicated to empowering creative self-expression!

As an integral member of the technical leadership team, you work closely with the Product, Design, and Marketing teams to drive strategic growth across RPI and Blurb's family of brands. You will help define our technical roadmap and culture, while also leading by example writing top-tier code. Technical mentoring and teaching are crucial skills, as is an ability to communicate with key stakeholders and partners, up to the executive team and board members.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical leader on our most demanding, cross-functional projects.
  • Possess a bias toward solving complex problems with simple, straight-forward solutions.
  • Fully and completely understand system inter-dependencies and limitations.
Possess expert knowledge in performance, scalability, enterprise system architecture, and engineering best practices.
  • Help in the career development of others; actively mentoring engineers on advanced technical issues, best engineering practices, and technical leadership skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical problems in clear and concise verbal and written form.
  • Exert technical influence over multiple teams, increasing their productivity and effectiveness by sharing your deep knowledge and experience. You are a visionary leader, builder and an operator.
  • Balance technical leadership and savvy with strong business judgment to make the right decisions about technology choices.

Skills/Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science required (related discipline or equivalent experience will be considered).
  • 10+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
Knowledge of object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms.
  • Deep knowledge of popular web application frameworks for creation of highly interactive, SPA web design (e.g., React and Redux or similar).
  • Deep hands-on technical expertise preferred in at least one major technical area: large scale full stack development, building complex distributed systems, designing massive global networks, and complex web design.
