Job Summary

RPI is seeking a hands-on Maintenance Technician to join our Rochester production facility on B Shift. This role is part of the plant maintenance team and supports the safe, reliable operation of digital print, bindery, and finishing equipment, as well as basic building and facility systems.

The Maintenance Technician works collaboratively with production, operations, and fellow maintenance team members to perform preventative maintenance, respond to maintenance requests, and troubleshoot equipment issues. This role plays a critical part in minimizing downtime, supporting production goals, and maintaining a safe and organized manufacturing environment.

This role offers a clear growth path for technicians who demonstrate strong technical skills, reliability, and ownership. With experience and performance, Maintenance Technicians may progress into more advanced technician levels with increased responsibility and scope.

Duties and Responsibilities

Safety & Workplace Standards

  • Perform all work in a safe manner and actively contribute to a strong safety culture.

  • Follow all safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout, proper PPE usage, and equipment safety procedures.

  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas, including maintenance shops, tools, and work sites.

  • Handle materials and supplies safely, including chemicals, in accordance with OSHA and company policies.

  • Act and communicate in a professional, respectful, and safety-conscious manner.

Equipment & Facilities Support

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and basic to intermediate repairs on digital print, bindery, and finishing equipment.

  • Provide Level 2 repairs and preventative maintenance for HP Series 3 presses and web presses; perform basic support on HP Series 4 presses.

  • Partner with HP shared maintenance and external service providers for more complex technical issues.

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair finishing and bindery equipment.

  • Assist with troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues under the guidance of senior technicians or supervisors as needed.

  • Support maintenance activities for building systems and facilities, including lighting, basic electrical, carpentry, painting, and general repairs.

  • Assist with equipment setup, adjustments, and changeovers as required.

  • Support installation and startup of new equipment or processes.

Collaboration & Responsiveness

  • Respond to maintenance requests and HelpDesk tickets in a timely manner, communicating status and progress clearly.

  • Work collaboratively with production teams to support daily operational needs.

  • Assist with production or manufacturing tasks when needed to support plant priorities.

Documentation & Organization

  • Accurately document maintenance activities, repairs, and preventative maintenance tasks.

  • Assist with tracking maintenance parts, tools, and supplies and communicating inventory needs.

  • Keep tools, workbenches, and maintenance areas clean, organized, and in good working condition.

  • Share ideas for improving safety, efficiency, and equipment reliability.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to safely operate manual and power tools used in equipment and facility maintenance.

  • Basic mechanical aptitude with interest in learning equipment troubleshooting and repair.

  • Familiarity with basic building systems such as electrical, lighting, plumbing, and ventilation.

  • Willingness to learn digital print, bindery, and finishing equipment through hands-on training.

  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively as part of a team.

  • Strong attention to safety, organization, and detail.

  • Basic verbal and written communication skills.

  • Basic computer skills; familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel is helpful.

  • Flexibility to work overtime, weekends, or holidays as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience providing Level 2 repairs and preventative maintenance on HP Series 3 presses and web presses.

  • Familiarity with HP Series 4 presses and coordination with OEM or shared maintenance providers.

  • Experience maintaining and troubleshooting finishing or bindery equipment in a production environment.

  • Prior experience in a high-mix, on-demand manufacturing or digital print environment.

Education and Experience

  • Vocational or technical training and/or relevant hands-on maintenance experience in a manufacturing or plant environment.

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • OSHA safety training preferred.

  • Forklift certification preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

  • Ability to bend, reach, grasp, and stoop.

  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.

  • Comfortable working in a moderately loud manufacturing environment.

  • Ability to work at heights using ladders or lifts when required.

  • Ability to work in varying environmental temperatures.
